AVEVA Historian is a data historian designed to collect, store, and retrieve large volumes of industrial time-series data. It supports modern industrial facilities that generate continuous, high-frequency data streams for monitoring, analysis, and reporting.

Historian rapidly acquires real-time data, stores it efficiently, and retrieves it when required for process analysis and operational reporting. By combining Microsoft SQL Server technology with high-speed data acquisition and data compression, Historian manages large datasets while maintaining query performance.

AVEVA Historian components

AVEVA Historian Server applications

Historian Server is the back-end service that captures real-time data for storage and retrieval. You use the System Platform IDE and the Operations Control Management Console (OCMC) to create tags and administer the Historian Server. Historian Client Web provides an on-premises web interface for accessing Historian Server data.

AVEVA Historian Client applications

The Historian Client suite includes Historian Client Trend, Historian Client Query, and Microsoft Office Add-ins. These applications allow you to query, visualize, and report on data stored in Historian Server.

What you can do with AVEVA Historian

With AVEVA Historian, you can:

  • Acquire data from a various sources
    The data acquisition subsystem provides high-speed data capture for plant data from AVEVA I/O Servers, DAServers, InTouch HMI, Application Server, and other supported devices. AVEVA Historian efficiently acquires and stores analog, discrete, and string data.

    The SuiteLink protocol used by AVEVA I/O Servers and DAServers adds time stamps and quality information as data enters the system.

  • Store large volumes of data efficiently
    The storage subsystem compresses data to maximize storage efficiency. In addition to process data, AVEVA Historian stores alarms and events, summary data, configuration data, security information, backups, and system monitoring data.

  • Retrieve data on demand
    The retrieval subsystem responds to SQL queries and enables fast access to large volumes of historical data. It also supports data access through REST APIs and SDKs.

  • Replicate stored data for reliability and security
    The replication subsystem replicates tag values to other AVEVA Historian servers with high fidelity or calculates and replicates summary data for those values.

  • Query time-series data using SQL extensions
    AVEVA Historian extends standard SQL to support time-series data and to control the resolution of returned results. For example, you can retrieve evenly spaced samples over a specified time range.
