Note: Hardware and virtualization technology continues to advance in speed, scope, and capabilities. The AVEVA PI System topologies content is kept up-to-date to reflect any upgrades and changes to the topology testing environments. The most recent changes to the content reflect an upgraded test hardware environment. See Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about PI System topologies for additional details.

Welcome to AVEVA PI System topologies! The intended audience of this publication is PI System administrators and anyone who installs and configures the PI System. This guide provides PI System topology designs and deployment recommendations. Each topology example is designed with a "prescriptive" topology approach.

This guide contains the following information for each sample topology:

  1. A network diagram that shows the location of all required machines, and any requirements for open ports or minimum performance (latency and throughput)

  2. Hardware specifications for each machine in the topology

  3. A software distribution manifest that provides instructions on what software should be installed on each of the servers in the topology

  4. Recommended product configurations and tuning parameters to ensure optimal performance

  5. A set of performance envelope metrics that indicate if a particular topology deployment is behaving within the published performance envelope

Important: Each topology must be set up and deployed as described in this guide. Any customizations or changes to a prescribed topology, such as "sizing," are discouraged. There are too many interconnected components in a PI System to estimate possible outcomes due to topology changes.
