PI SQL Client OLEDB

Connect with PI SQL Data Access Server

  • Last UpdatedJan 04, 2023
  • 3 minute read

The PI SQL Client OLEDB login mechanism is used to connect with PI SQL Data Access Server (RTQP Engine) on PI AF server. After you install PI SQL Client OLEDB and attempt the first connection with PI SQL Data Access Server (RTQP Engine), you need to authenticate your identity.

Note: Login credentials are not required when using Windows integrated security.

The TrustedServersOnly registry key, located at HKLM\SOFTWARE\PISystem\PI SQL Client, enables or disables HTTPS connection to a server with an untrusted certificate. For backward compatibility, the TrustedServersOnly key is set to 0 by default, which allows connections to servers that use a certificate that is not in the trusted certificates list of the client machine. As a security best practice, OSIsoft recommends that you set it to 1 to prevent these connections.

Before you start

Open the login dialog in the application that you want to use to connect to the PI System. You can use any application that can connect to a data source using an OLE DB provider some examples include PI SQL Commander Lite and Microsoft Visual Studio.

Procedure

  1. From the application you are using for the connection, select PI SQL Client as the data provider.

The following image shows the provider selection in the Data Link Properties window accessed from a UDL file. The window for selecting the data provider depends on the application used for the connection.

  2. Access the Data Link Properties window.

  3. In the Connection tab, in the AF Server field, provide the PI AF server name.

  4. In the AF Database field, provide the PI AF database name.

  5. In the Authentication area, provide valid Windows user login information for the machine that runs PI SQL DAS.

Note: Login credentials are not required when using a trusted connection.

  6. Optional: Click Test Connection to see if your requested connection succeeds.

  7. Optional: On the Advanced tab, in the General area, do any of the following:

    • Change the default Initial Catalog.

    • Change the Time Zone.

  8. Optional: In the Timeouts area, enter a value in the Command Timeout field.

Note: The Connection Timeout field is not available.

  9. Optional: In the Network area, do any of the following:

    • Change the default order of the protocols.

    • Change the port number for a protocol.

Note: If you change port numbers, make sure that PI SQL DAS (RTQP Engine) uses the same port numbers, otherwise a connection cannot be established.

For more information, see the PI SQL Data Access Server (RTQP Engine) Administrator Guide.

  10. Click OK.
