Naming conventions for System Platform computers

When assigning computer names to System Platform nodes, follow general computer name standards, as applicable to NetBIOS and DNS host naming conventions.

Allowed characters are:

• alphabetic characters (A-Z)

• numeric characters (0-9), the minus sign (-)

• period (.). Note that a period can only be used to delimit the components of domain-type names.

Characters that cannot be used in a System Platform computer name are:

• ampersand (&)

• apostrophe (')at sign (@)

• asterisk (*)

• backslash (\)

• braces ({})

• caret (^)

• colon (:)

• comma (,)

• dollar sign ($)

• exclamation point (!)

• forward slash (/)

• greater than sign (>)

• less than sign (<)

• number sign (#)

• parentheses (())

• percent (%)

• period (.)

• question mark (?)

• quotation mark (“)

• space (blank)

• tilde (~)

• underscore (_)

• vertical bar (|)

Other considerations when assigning a computer name:

• The first character must be alphabetic or numerical, not a special character.

• Although numbers are allowed, the name cannot contain only numbers.

• The last character cannot be a minus sign or a period.

• To avoid problems, use only letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9). Do not use periods, underscores, or hyphens.
