AVEVA™ PI Server 2024 R2 is a feature release that offers improvements in performance and scalability, support for cloud-hosted database services, and single sign-on (SSO) redundancy options for AVEVA Identity Manager (AIM) server. This release is geared towards enabling data connectivity across the enterprise and the seamless integration of PI Server with cloud and edge computing environments.
What's new in AVEVA PI Server 2024 R2?
AVEVA PI Server 2024 R2 offers the following new features and functionality:
-
Enhanced cloud-managed support for PI AF: You can now store PI Asset Framework (AF) data in Microsoft Azure SQL Managed Instance and Amazon RDS for SQL Server, expanding deployment options for cloud-hosted environments. See Learn about a PI AF server installation and upgrade.
-
Redundant single sign-on (SSO) support: Data Archive, PI Asset Framework, PI Analysis Service, PI Notifications Service, and PI PowerShell now support redundant SSO (RSSO) configurations by leveraging enhanced redundancy capabilities in AVEVA Identity Manager (AIM), improving availability for claims-based authentication via OpenID Connect (OIDC). See Configure AVEVA Identity Manager for redundancy.
-
Audit Trail support for cloud-hosted environments: Audit Trail is now supported for Microsoft Azure SQL Database, Microsoft Azure SQL Managed Instance, and Amazon RDS for SQL Server in PI Asset Framework. This feature enables review of changes to PI AF objects as well as certain system and security settings for traceability and compliance purposes. See Track PI AF changes with audit trail.
How is AVEVA PI Server 2024 R2 different from AVEVA PI Server 2018?
PI Server 2024 R2 introduces several key advancements that build on the strong foundation of previous versions. While PI Server 2018 remains a secure and reliable choice, PI Server 2024 R2 further enhances the system's capabilities, especially in hybrid environments that integrate on-premises, edge, and cloud platforms.
Key Differences Include:
-
Enhanced Edge-to-Cloud Integration: Improvements to the seamless integration of data across on-premises, edge, and cloud environments. This results in better data flow and consistency across distributed operations, ensuring that all parts of an organization can access the same high-quality data in real-time, regardless of where it is collected or stored.
-
Advanced Analytics Integration: Greater support for cloud-based analytics, including machine learning. This enhancement is facilitated through tighter integration with AVEVA Data Hub and other cloud services, allowing users to apply advanced analytics directly to their PI System data. This capability is crucial for applications like predictive maintenance, where real-time data processing and analysis can drive operational efficiency and reliability.
-
Improved Data Accessibility: Easier and more secure access to operational data from various locations. This includes new security features such as certificate rotation, which ensures that data connections remain secure over time. The system also offers more flexible options for accessing and sharing data, whether on-premises, at the edge, or in the cloud, ensuring that authorized users can access the data they need, when they need it.
-
OIDC Support: Includes support for claims-based authentication using OpenID Connect (OIDC). OIDC enhances security by enabling more flexible and secure user authentication across hybrid environments. This means that organizations can more easily manage user identities and access controls when integrating on-premises systems with cloud services.
