Overview

AVEVA™ PI Server 2024 R2 is a feature release that focuses on performance, accessibility, and manageability. This release also includes a variety of bug fixes and security remediations to improve the stability and functionality of Data Archive and PI Asset Framework (AF).

The AVEVA PI Server 2024 R2 installation kit has updated components for Data Archive, AF Server, PI Notifications Service, PI AF Client, and PowerShell Tools for the PI System. Some of the other components including Buffer Subsystem, PI Analysis Service, PI SMT, PI SDK, and PI Collective Manager remain at the same version as delivered in the previous release.

New features and enhancements

The following new features are introduced in AVEVA PI Server 2024 R2:

Enhanced cloud-managed support for PI AF: You can now store PI Asset Framework (AF) data in Microsoft Azure SQL Managed Instance and Amazon RDS for SQL Server, expanding deployment options for cloud-hosted environments. See Learn about a PI AF server installation and upgrade.
Redundant single sign-on (SSO) support: PI Data Archive, PI Asset Framework, PI Analysis Service, PI Notification Service, and PI PowerShell now support redundant SSO (RSSO) configurations by leveraging enhanced redundancy capabilities in AVEVA Identity Manager (AIM), improving availability for claims-based authentication via OpenID Connect (OIDC). Audit Trail support for cloud-hosted environments: Audit Trail functionality in PI AF is now available in the three supported cloud database platforms, which include Microsoft Azure SQL Database, Microsoft Azure SQL Managed Instance, and Amazon RDS for SQL Server. Audit Trail enables organizations to track and review changes to PI AF objects, as well as key system and security settings, ensuring robust traceability and compliance across hybrid and cloud deployments. Asset Framework	121826	Resolved: Loading user permissions when an AF SQL database contained many AF identities has been corrected. Users no longer receive the "Access Denied: The user <DOMAIN\account> does not have rights to read the PI AF Server" error when attempting a connection.

Asset Framework	123499	Resolved: OIDC 'Role' Mappings could not be recreated through PI Builder because of incorrectly loaded MappingAccountName. This issue has been fixed and roles created using PI SMT can now be imported and exported correctly from PI Builder.
Asset Framework	123611	Resolved: The AF SDK application fails to edit OIDC mappings and returns the following error: [-10352] IdentityMapping type cannot be edited. This issue has been fixed and OIDC mappings can now be edited using the AF SDK.
PI Notifications Service	110908	Resolved: Replaced CefSharp with WebView2 to improve security and allow customers to install and manage Chromium dependencies separate from the PI Notifications Service installation.
PI Notifications Service	111184	Resolved: The Notifications Management tab now correctly uses OIDC authentication when available, eliminating unnecessary prompts for Windows credentials.
PI Notifications Service	122386	Resolved: Compatibility has been restored between PI System Explorer 2024 and PI Notifications Service 3.0.x (2023/2023 Patch 1). Connecting no longer triggers a “Could not load file or assembly” exception.
PI Notifications Service	123251	Resolved: The repair and change operations for PI Notifications Service 2024 via Windows Control Panel now complete successfully without installation failure.
Data Archive	70636	Resolved: Steam table methods now use the IAPWS R7-97 (2012) library, which is based on the Industrial Formulation 1997 for water and steam. The updated implementation is concurrency-safe, more accurate, and supports a broader range (1073 K to 2273 K, 0–50 MPa). See Steam functions (tag-based calculations).
Data Archive	106405	Resolved: Fixed an issue where collective replication in Data Archive failed with error “[-10566] Point validation failed” if the access control list (ACL) included a deleted identity during point creation. This error no longer occurs, and replication now completes successfully even when ACLs contain previously deleted identities.
Data Archive	121557	Resolved: Setting Archive_MaxQueryExecutionSec to 0 previously caused timeouts during multipoint, single-timestamp data retrieval calls. This configuration now works as expected without triggering timeouts.
Data Archive	116557	Resolved: The piartool -thread "subsystem" -info command has been updated to return only valid thread information for tasks that are actively executed. This ensures that customers receive accurate and relevant diagnostics without misleading or incomplete data.
Data Archive	119426	Resolved: Previously, PI Update Manager could fail when attempting to load a corrupted events queue file for a persistent consumer. PI Update Manager now handles corrupted queue files reliably, maintaining system stability and continuity.
Data Archive	8543	Resolved: The PIUPD_MaxConsTimeout configuration setting is now correctly applied, ensuring that data consumers remain connected and are no longer disconnected every two minutes.
Data Archive	76996	Resolved: Archive shifting now correctly accommodates the creation of new PI Points beyond the initial primary region size. This prevents the error [-11053] No more available records in this archive and ensures sufficient archive space is maintained.
Data Archive	111523	Resolved: OIDC authentication no longer fails during PI Network Manager startup when the AIM service is inactive. The system now handles this scenario gracefully.
Data Archive	111821	Resolved: The archive subsystem now correctly handles high-volume tag operations. It no longer writes data to incorrect tags when many tag deletions, creations, and event writes occur in rapid succession.
Data Archive	111944	Resolved: Data points that reference previously deleted tags are now reliably flushed by the archive subsystem. This ensures consistent data handling and prevents potential data loss.
Data Archive	115542	Resolved: Two new tuning parameters have been added to address timeout issues: AIMRoleRetrievalTimeout: Extends the RPC timeout beyond the default 30 seconds to support longer-running operations. MaxHTTPBasicParserPayloadBody: Increases the allowable page data size beyond the previous 8 MB limit, improving performance for large payloads.

There are no known issues or upgrade compatibility considerations in AVEVA PI Server 2024 R2. Refer to the AVEVA Support portal page for a complete list of known issues in previous versions.
