AVEVA™ PI System Topologies for PI Server 2018

How do I select the correct topology?

Use the decision tree to determine the correct topology for your use case based on system event rates.

A few important points on topology selection:

  • Topology guidance is designed to work with the most current versions of AVEVA PI Server 2018 or 2024. If using older versions, contact AVEVA Customer Support.

  • Topologies are intended for new systems. Upgrades to existing systems should be planned using performance data captured from the existing system. This will always be more accurate than a lab simulation.

  • Topology 1 can be used for basic deployment environments and proof of concept projects where the focus is on functionality instead of performance. Topology 1 assumes there is zero to light-use of event frames, requires Microsoft SQL Server Express edition, and is not suitable for high availability (HA).

  • Topology 2 (either A or B) is best suited for small to medium PI Systems that do not require high availability.

  • Topology 3 is also suitable for high availability environments. The collective shown in the decision tree below is NOT HA, and is intended for performance. HA requires a minimum of three (3) Data Archive nodes; four (4) nodes are recommended at the upper ends of the performance envelope.

  • Topology 4 is best suited for small to medium PI Systems that require high availability. It assumes the system has an average use of event frames and resides in a plant or on a single-site LAN-connected environment.
