NERC CIP considerations

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a nonprofit organization responsible for ensuring the reliability of the bulk power system in North America. NERC develops various industry standards and has the authority to enforce them with fines up to one million dollars per day per violation. NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) is a set of standards designed to protect Bulk Electrical System Cyber Assets, or BES Cyber Assets (BCAs) from malicious or accidental damage or disturbance.

In accordance with NERC CIP, we have taken proper measures to ensure sensitive information is not exposed when using our adapters.

Upon initial configuration and startup of the adapter, the port number and installation directory are stored in the appsettings.json file, located in the following directories:

  • Windows: %ProgramFiles%/OSIsoft/Adapters/BACnet

  • Linux: /opt/OSIsoft/Adapters/BACnet

You can modify the device name reported to the OMF Health endpoint from the host name by adding a deviceName string property to the appsettings.json file.

You have the option to adjust metadataLevel settings to see only the level of information you need for your system. By default, metadataLevel is set to Medium, which includes adapter information that is not considered sensitive.

To view details on the different metadata levels available for this setting, see Metadata.

For instructions on how to change your adapter's metadataLevel, see Manage adapter-wide settings.

Note: After initial adapter configuration, you cannot modify any of the settings stored in the appsettings.json file through EdgeCmd. You can modify settings, such as the port number or device name, by directly editing the appsettings.json file and then restarting the adapter service.
