PI connectors diagnostics

PI connectors provide diagnostics through the Message Log function, which shows status events and error messages that are generated from a PI connector, PI Connector Relay, or PI Data Collection Manager.

Use PI Data Collection Manager to view status events and error messages.

  • To view status events and error messages that are generated by a PI connector or PI Connector Relay, select the component, Select the Diagnostics tab, and then select Message Log.

  • To view status events and error messages generated from PI Data Collection Manager, select Settings icon, and then select Application Message Log.

  • Select Cancel to return to the PI Data Collection Manager Configuration page.

The 1,000 most recent messages are available. You can view older messages in the host machine's Windows Event Viewer under Applications and Services Logs > PI Connectors.

Each message in the log displays its severity level, time stamp, and the message detail. Internally, time stamps are stored as UTC times but displayed according to the browser's time zone settings.

You can specify the message recording level (that is, what types of messages are captured), as well as which messages are displayed on the page.

Specify messages to record

To specify which types of messages to record, select Record message_level and select an option.

If you change the message recording behavior for a connector, the change is immediately reflected in the message log for the PI Connector configuration site. Likewise, if a connector user changes the message recording behavior in the PI Connector configuration site, the change is immediately reflected in PI Data Collection Manager.

Note: Changing the recording setting affects which messages are recorded, not which messages are displayed. For example, if you specify the recording setting Record error messages and the display setting Show warning and error messages, the log could contain older warning messages that were recorded prior to the change.

View the message log

To specify which messages display in the message log, select Show message_level and select an option.

Changes to the message display options are not reflected across applications.

You can sort messages by severity level, date (including time stamp), and message text. To sort, select the header of the column you want to sort. To reverse the sort order, select the column header again.

Messages are limited to 100 messages per page. If more than 100 messages are displayed, use the navigation buttons (First, Previous, Next, and Last) to navigate through the pages.

To filter messages by a specific string, type the string in the Filter Messages field.
