Principles of Operation

The principles of operation are:

  • The PI OPC UA Server enables access to OPC UA Clients, enabling browsing and obtaining information about the data and properties of PI points. The server reads and writes current values and can be used to sign up to receive new values as they become available.

  • PI OPC UA Server does not have to connect to every Data Archive known to the local system. Use the Known Servers Table feature in the Configuration Tool to only connect to the Data Archives from which data is required.

  • The default installation of the server is read-only, but can be configured to write data as well.

For more information, see PI System configuration.

The following OPC UA specifications limitations do apply:

  • Writes cannot be performed to variables that represent configuration items in the underlying PI System.

  • Writes and subscriptions are not allowed to properties.
