PI Connector for Wonderware Historian installation guide

The installation of PI Connector for Wonderware Historian involves elements of PI Server (PI Data Archive and PI Asset Framework) as well as assets that are installed on the client server with the Historian application. This includes the Historian SDK.

The following table is provided as a quick reference to the installation process.

Installation details

Verify that the host meets the software requirements for the connector, which include:

  • Compatible operating system

  • HTML5-compliant web browser

  • PI Server

Operating system: The OS on your host machine must be compatible with the connector. Operating system requirements are provided in the release notes, available through the OSIsoft Customer Portal.

Web browser: Google Chrome version 80 or later

PI Server: Consists of PI Data Archive and PI Asset Framework (AF) server. For this connector, you need:

  • Data Archive 2018 SP3 Patch 1 or later

  • PI AF server 2018 SP3 Patch 2 or later

    Download the most recent version of PI Server from the Products section of the OSIsoft Customer Portal.

Verify that Wonderware Historian SDK 2017 or later is installed on the client machine.

This SDK is installed with Historian. Refer to your Wonderware installation disks and latest Patch and Hotfixes, or refer to vendor documentation.

Note: You can see if the SDK is installed by going to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features and viewing the list under Uninstall or change a program.

Check to see if files from an installation of Wonderware Historian SDK 2017 or later need to be copied to the Program Files (x86) directory.

If Wonderware Historian SDK 2017 or later is installed:

  • Copy the files from C:\Program Files\ArchestrA\Toolkits\Bin\x64 to C:\Program Files (x86)\ArchestrA\Toolkits\Bin\x64.

Before starting the connector, configure security settings.

Connector access to PI Data Archive and PI AF servers is based on Windows Integrated Security.

Note: Run the connector on a host computer that is a member of a Windows domain and use a domain account for its identity. Windows domain accounts are the more-secure option for hosting the PI Connector.

Create the Windows account.

Configure firewalls.

This can be accomplished through Windows Defender Firewall Manager.

The default port for PI Data Archive clients is 5450. The default port for PI AF clients is 5457.

Create the PI identity for the connector.

Note: The PI System Management Tools utility is used for many connector configuration options.

Map the Windows account to the newly created PI Identity.

Enable PI Data Archive access for the PI identity.

Create and configure security for the PI AF database.

Enable PI AF database access for the Windows account.

Identify the administration port number.

Install the connector.

Go to the OSIsoft Customer Portal to download the install kit, then run the setup wizard.

If any prerequisite software included in the connector setup kit has not been installed, the setup program prompts you to configure the additional software included in the setup kit before installing and configuring the connector software.

Add or modify the data sources from which the connector retrieves data.

Specify which servers will receive data from the connector (PI Data servers and PI Data servers).
