Note: The following features are not supported if you use a cloud-managed database service to host the PI AF database: AF Collectives, backups during upgrade, PI RTQP Engine, and PI OLEDB Enterprise. SQL Server maintenance jobs can be run in cloud database platforms that support jobs.

For production systems, PI AF Server 2024 R2 can be deployed on the following Microsoft Windows Server operating systems in decreasing order of recommendation:

  • Windows Server 2025: All editions in both full and core installations

  • Windows Server 2022: All editions in both full and core installations

  • Windows Server 2019: All editions in both full and core installations 

  • Windows Server 2016: All editions in both full and core installations

For test systems, PI AF Server 2024 R2 can be deployed on Windows 11 in addition to the Windows Server versions listed above for production systems.

PI System requirements

The following minimum version of Data Archive is required for PI AF Client:

  • Data Archive version 3.4.405 or later

  • Data Archive 2024 support the newest features introduced by PI Server 2024, as well as the transfer of on-premises PI Server data to the AVEVA data services portal using the PI to CONNECT agent (introduced in PI Server 2023).

Supported SQL Server versions (on-prem)

  • SQL Server 2022 (Windows version only)

  • SQL Server 2019 (Windows version only)

  • SQL Server 2017

  • SQL Server 2016 SP3

  • PI AF server works with 32-bit or 64-bit SQL Server versions.

Required Azure SQL Database components

  • Database engine, Agent (replication)

Required SQL Server (on-prem) components

  • Database engine, Agent (backup, replication, and audit trail)

SQL Server components not used by PI AF server

  • SQL Server components such as Reporting Services, Analysis Services, Integration Services, Notification Services, etc. are not used by PI AF server.

SQL Server Requirements for PI AF High Availability

To take advantage of the PI AF High Availability (HA Collective) feature, the primary collective member must run SQL Server Standard Edition, SQL Server Business Intelligence, SQL Server Enterprise Edition, or SQL Server Datacenter Edition. SQL Server does not need to reside on the same box as PI AF Server.

SQL Server Requirements for PI AF Audit Trail Functionality

The PI AF Audit Trail feature requires SQL Server Enterprise edition for supported SQL Server versions of SQL Server 2014 and earlier. The PI AF Audit Trail feature is also supported in:

  • SQL Server 2016 SP3 Enterprise or Standard Editions

  • SQL Server 2017 Enterprise or Standard Editions (Windows Version Only)

  • SQL Server 2019 Enterprise or Standard Editions (Windows Version Only. Audit Trail does not work with Cumulative Update 2.)

  • SQL Server 2022 Enterprise or Standard Editions (Windows Version Only)

Sign on to the customer portal with your support credentials and then search for and download the PI Asset Framework (AF) Server Release Notes for the appropriate release. The release notes provide details on additional system requirements for PI AF server.
