Steam functions (tag-based calculations)

  • Last UpdatedSep 23, 2025

Steam functions let you calculate thermodynamic properties of steam, such as enthalpy, entropy, temperature, pressure, volume, and steam quality, directly in Performance Equations. You can use these functions with either English or SI units, depending on your requirements.

Note: The steam functions described in this section are for use in Performance Equations (tag-based calculations). For steam functions used in Asset Analytics (asset-based calculations), see List of steam functions for analysis expressions.

Use steam functions when you need to analyze or model steam systems, perform energy balances, or include steam property calculations in your PI System workflows.

In this section, you'll find:

  • An overview of steam functions and supported engineering units

  • Naming conventions for steam function calls

  • Valid input ranges for each function

  • A reference for each steam function, including syntax, arguments, and sample values

For more information about how steam functions work with Performance Equations, see Performance equations (PE) syntax and functions reference.
