Connection with OIDC Authentication

PI DataLink 2023 introduces the ability to connect using the Open ID Connect (OIDC) authentication protocol with PI Server 2023 and later. Additional post-installation configuration is required on the PI Server for PI DataLink 2023 to connect using OIDC. Consult the PI Server 2023 User Guide for these configuration steps.

  1. When first connecting to a PI Server configured to support OIDC, you will be prompted with an authentication dialog. You can choose either OpenID Connect Authentication or Windows Authentication. The selected authentication mode will be remembered the next time a connection is initiated to that server.

    OpenID Connect Authentication

  2. If you choose OIDC authentication, a browser window will open and prompt you to login with your credentials.

    Enter log in credentials

  3. After entering your credentials, you will be asked if you consent to the use of your credentials.

    Prompt for consent

  4. The token used for OIDC authentication will expire after a set time period. Next time you use PI DataLink after the period elapses, a browser window will re-open and you will need to login again with your credentials.

At any time you may switch your authentication mode between OIDC authentication and Windows authentication. You can navigate to the Connection Manager that can be found through a link in the Settings Menu.

  5. Once the Connection Manager is open, right click on a PI Data Archive or AF Server and select Connect As.You will then be prompted with the authentication mode dialog and can switch the mode. If you select OIDC authentication mode, you will need to go through the login prompt and consent as described earlier.
