Layers are methods that allow geographic datasets to be displayed on maps and provide a visual representation of a geographic dataset in any digital map context. A layer is a slice or stratum of geographic reality in a specific location that is similar to a legend item on a paper map.
A map layer is a Geographic Information System (GIS) database containing groups of point, line, or area features representing a particular class or type of real-world entities. A layer comprises a visual representation of each feature as well as a link to the feature's database properties. A GIS map is created by integrating multiple layers.
When a layer contains many points, the map widget has the option to cluster the points, i.e., the points are grouped automatically such that the higher-level layer is displayed on the map view.
