Migration from Amazon Web Services WorkSpaces (WorkSpaces) to Amazon Web Services AppStream 2.0

AVEVA Unified Engineering on CONNECT has been enhanced to change the desktop streaming experience to simplify installation and improve performance.

During the lifecycle of Unified Engineering on CONNECT 3.5 and 3.6, all user desktops will be migrated from Amazon Web Services WorkSpaces (WorkSpaces) to Amazon Web Services AppStream 2.0 (AppStream).

Note:The migration of customers to Amazon AppStream will be carried out during scheduled maintenance windows outside of standard business hours. Customers will be notified in advance of the maintenance schedule. During these windows, access to WorkSpaces will be temporarily unavailable. Note that this change has no effect on any AVEVA applications or project data held on P: drive, it is only a simplification of how the Unified Engineering desktops are streamed to end-users. AVEVA applications functionality is not affected by this change.

A document is published for the upcoming AppStream improvements, refer to the document from software downloads in the AVEVA Knowledge and Support website.

Key Improvements:

  • AppStream runs directly in HTML5-compatible browsers, without the need of any installation. This provides a consistent and improved experience on managed devices, BYOD environments, and includes support for Chromebooks and other devices.

  • Improved hardware specification for Unified Engineering desktops. AppStream sessions will have twice the CPU cores, from 4 to 8 cores, and increased RAM from 16GB to 32GB.

  • Enhanced Canvas View workflow which eliminates dual cursor issues.

  • Full dual-screen mode support.

  • Added Japanese keyboard compatibility.

Important Notes:

  • Existing user WorkSpaces will be removed.  Any local data on users' WorkSpaces will not be preserved. This includes files such as:

    • User files stored on C: and D: drives

    • AVEVA application user-settings: Stored on D:\Users\<username>\Appdata\Local\Aveva\

    • User profile settings, for example Keyboard/Language settings will not be preserved

  • The sync functionality in OneDrive desktop is replaced with native OneDrive for Business. Personal account of OneDrive desktop can still be accessed using a browser.
