InTouch HMI quick start deployment

InTouch HMI quick deployment system architecture

The suggested topology for a small system has a great deal of built-in flexibility. All software components could be installed on a single computer, especially if only stand-alone applications are planned rather than managed applications.

The following diagrams illustrate this flexibility. Shaded blocks indicate components that can be installed together on one computer or on separate computers.

  • PLCs are remote equipment, but the communication drivers that connect them to the HMI can be installed on one computer with the design software, WindowMaker, or the run-time computer, WindowViewer. If you already have one or more PLCs from a specific manufacturer, you can select the relevant communication driver during installation.

  • To get up and running quickly, we recommend using the SIM communication driver. This will give you simulated run-time data.

  • Install the IDE as an option if you plan to create managed applications. This quick start focuses on creating a stand-alone application.

  • Install the Historian as an option if you plan to historize and configure trend clients as part of your InTouch application.

  • The System Management Server (SMS) and license server are part of the install and are configured post-installation. We recommend installing these components together to reduce computer hardware expenses.

The System Management Server (SMS) allows for encrypted communication between machines. Only one of the machines in the network is identified and configured as a System Management Server. Machines running AVEVA products can then connect to that single System Management Server to establish trust and configure encrypted communications.
