To ensure that the interface restarts when the interface node is restarted, configure it as a Windows service. Install the interface as a service using PI ICU.

  1. Open PI ICU and select the Service tab.

  2. Set the fields as described in the following table.

    Field

    Description

    Service name

    Name of the interface service.

    ID

    Numeric ID of the interface instance. Must be unique for each instance.

    Display name

    The service name displayed in the Windows Services control panel. The default display name is the service name with a PI- prefix. You can override the default. To ensure that AVEVA-related services are sorted together in the Services control panel, retain the PI- prefix.

    Log on as

    The Windows account associated with the service.

    Note: You can use either a local, domain or virtual service account. If you decide to use PI buffering, the account specified in the "Log on as" portion of the Service tab must be a member of either the "PI Buffering Administrators" or the "PI Buffer Writers" local windows user groups. For more details, see the PI Buffer Subsystem user guide.

    Note: The virtual service account might not have enough privileges, especially when used with the ASCII files PlugIn, to move and consequently purge the referenced input data file. The interface logs corresponding warning and error messages to the PI message log.

    Examples of these messages are:

    MoveFileEx() 5 Access is denied
    DeleteFile() 5 Access is denied

    Users are advised to set the Read/Write security permissions onto the directory where the interface executable is located as well as to the directory from where the input data files are read.

    UserName

    UserName, if any, for the referenced user.

    Password

    Password, if any, for the referenced user.

    Dependencies

    Any services that the interface depends on. The only dependency is the TCP/IP service, which is pre-configured. If buffering is enabled, you are prompted to create a dependency on the buffering service.

    Startup type

    Specifies whether the interface service starts automatically when the interface node is restarted. Generally, interface services are set to start automatically.

  3. To create the service, select Create.

  4. To start the service, select Start service button.
