PI SQL Data Access Server (RTQP Engine)

Run the PI SQL DAS (RTQP Engine) setup kit

The configurable parameters can only be changed as part of the installation procedure. If you need to change a parameter after installation, you will have to uninstall PI SQL DAS (RTQP Engine) and reinstall it.

In rare cases, you may need to manually install RTQP Engine scripts or PI OLEDB Enterprise scripts in SQL Server. Perform this task only with assistance from Tech Support. To copy the script files to disk without executing them, run the setup kit with the parameter EXECUTE_SQL_SCRIPTS=0, and select AF SQL Database Extension Scripts during installation. After installation, the script files are located in the following directories:

  • [PIHOME]\PIPC\SQLDAS\RTQP Engine\SQL (RTQP Engine scripts)

  • [PIHOME]\PIPC\OLEDB\Server Agent\SQL (PI OLEDB Enterprise scripts)

Install PI SQL DAS (RTQP Engine)

  1. Double-click PI SQL Data Access Server (RTQP Engine)_version_.exe.

    The self-extracting executable window opens.

  2. Select whether you would like to participate in the PI System Customer Experience Improvement Program or not and then select Next.

  3. Select the SQL platform used by the AF Server.

    • Microsoft SQL Server or Named Instance

    Skip step 5.

    • Microsoft Azure SQL Server or Azure Managed Instance

Complete the optional installation steps for Microsoft Azure SQL Database or Microsoft Azure Managed Instance on the AF Server.

    • Amazon RDS for SQL Server

Complete the optional installation steps for Microsoft Azure SQL Database or Microsoft Azure Managed Instance on the AF Server.

The RTQP Engine installation type and features menu.

  4. Select the features to be installed.

If the SQL Server that runs the PIFD database is on a separate machine, install the AF SQL Database Extension Scripts remotely. The user account that runs the installation must have Windows administrator privileges, a logon for the SQL Server, and system administrator privileges for the remote machine and the SQL Server. The install kit can also be run on the SQL Server machine directly in order to install the scripts.

  5. (Optional) If you selected the Amazon RDS or Microsoft Azure for the SQL Server, select the checkbox to acknowledge that you completed the pre-installation tasks. For more information, see the following sections:

  6. Select Next to proceed to SQL Server connection settings:

    • The SQL Server instance name is automatically detected.

If the AF Server is not fully configured, you may enter the SQL Server instance name manually.

    • Select the Validate connection to SQL Server option only if the Script installation feature was selected or the scripts have been successfully installed on the SQL Server already.

The RTQP Engine SQL Server connection menu.

    1. (optional) If you chose Microsoft Azure SQL Server, select an authentication method.

When the AF Server is configured to use User-Assigned Managed Identity (UAMI) to connect to Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance, the User-Assigned Identity authentication field is required. You must provide the Microsoft Entra ID Object ID of the User-Assigned Identity so that the service can authenticate with the database. The User-Assigned Identity authentication field is displayed only when the AF Server authentication method is set to User-Assigned Identity.

When using a System Managed Identity, leave the User-Assigned Identity field empty. Otherwise, enter the Client ID if it has not already been pre-filled from AfService.config. When the AF Server is configured to use a User-Assigned Managed Identity, the Object ID is also required. Both the Client ID and the Object ID can be retrieved from the AVEVA Knowledge & Support Centre.

For all other authentication methods, such as System Assigned Identity, the field is not available.

  7. Proceed to perform any of the following or skip this step to use the default settings:

    • Choose the ports that the service will use.

    • Select a SSL certificate for encrypting the communication.

    • Specify a different account for the PI SQL DAS (RTQP Engine) service, for example a Managed Service Account.

The RTQP Engine configuration information menu.

The RTQP Engine Service Accounts menu.

    The default settings are:

    • The service runs using a virtual service account.

    • HTTPS port defaults to 5464, Net.Tcp to 5465.

    • Self-signed certificate.

    • Firewall exceptions for ports 5464 and 5465 are created.

    Consider the following:

    • If you decide to use Managed Service Account instead of the virtual service account, you must install it on the computer. For more information, see the Add-ADComputerServiceAccount and Install-ADServiceAccount Active Directory cmdlets or Installing a Managed Service Account.

    • If you upgrade from an older version, advanced options are not accessible. PI SQL Data Access Server (RTQP Engine) is installed using the default settings. If you want to use custom settings, you need to manually uninstall the older version prior to installing the new version.

  8. Select Install.

  9. When the installation completes, select Finish.
