Summary and count event calculations

Use summary and count event calculations to monitor a source PI point and store results in a totalizer PI point. The source point provides the input data, while the totalizer point records the calculated output at each configured interval. You configure both types by creating or editing a totalizer PI point in the Totalizers tool in PI System Management Tools (SMT).

When to set these parameters

  • Initial configuration: When you are setting up a new totalizer, you will configure these parameters as part of the initial setup process.

  • Updating or tuning: You may need to adjust these settings if you find that the existing configuration does not meet your reporting or monitoring needs. This could be due to changes in operational requirements or to improve accuracy and performance.

  • Periodic review: Regularly reviewing and updating these configurations can help ensure that the totalizer calculations remain relevant and accurate as your data and operational contexts evolve.

Summary calculations

Use summary calculations to aggregate data from a source PI point over a defined time interval.

To configure a summary calculation, open the totalizers tool in PI System Management Tools (SMT). In the Totalizer Type field, select Summary and choose one of the following calculation types from the dropdown:

  • Total: The sum of all recorded values over the specified time range.

  • Average: The mean (sum of values divided by the number of values).

  • Minimum: The lowest recorded value in the specified time range.

  • Maximum: The highest recorded value in the specified time range.

  • Range: The difference between the maximum and minimum values in the time range.

  • Standard deviation: A measure of how much values deviate from the mean.

  • Median: The middle value when all recorded values are sorted in ascending order.

Count events

Use count event calculations to track how often a source PI point meets a specific condition.

To configure a count events calculation, open the totalizers tool in PI System Management Tools (SMT). In Totalizer Type, select Count Events, then choose Events where value changes. From the dropdown menu, select one of the following conditions:

  • All events: Counts all recorded events.

  • Event equal to a value: Counts occurrences where a value matches a specified number.

  • Event not equal to a value: Counts occurrences where a value does not match a specified number.

  • Event greater than a value: Counts occurrences where a value is greater than a specified number.

  • Event greater than or equal to a value: Counts occurrences where a value is greater than or equal to a specified number.

  • Event less than a value: Counts occurrences where a value is less than a specified number.

  • Event less than or equal to a value: Counts occurrences where a value is less than or equal to a specified number

  • Event change from greater than or equal to less than: Counts instances where a value transitions from being greater than or equal to a specified number to being less than it.

  • Event change from less than to greater than or equal to: Counts instances where a value transitions from being less than a specified number to being greater than or equal to it.
