Import Industrial Graphics to an application

  • Last UpdatedJun 03, 2026
  • 3 minute read

You can import Industrial Graphics created in another application to the active application running in WindowMaker.

You can import Industrial Graphics from an aaPKG or XML file. The imported graphics overwrite any graphics of the application open for editing in WindowMaker. If the file contains non-supported components, the import stops and a dialog box with an error is shown.

Non-supported components typically include the following:

  • Incompatible custom controls

  • Unsupported ActiveX or .NET objects

  • Missing dependencies

  • Legacy graphic elements

  • Unsupported script libraries

  • Graphics created in newer product versions that are not supported by the target environment.

Import Industrial Graphics to an application

  1. Open the application in WindowMaker that you want to import Industrial Graphics.

  2. On the File menu, select Import.

  3. From the Visualization group, select Industrial Graphics.

The Import Industrial Graphics dialog box appears to specify the folder containing an export file of Industrial Graphics.

  4. Select the drop-down next to the File name field, and select the file type that you want to import.

  5. Using File Explorer, navigate to the folder containing the required exported file of Industrial Graphics.

    SelectXML

  6. Select the file to import, and then select Open.

Note: Select up to 150 XML files at a time to ensure smoother application performance.

The Import industrial graphics dialog box appears with the following options for overwriting graphics.

    Importing industrial graphics dialog

    • Skip: Do not copy - The graphics will not be imported.

    • Overwrite if the source content change version is higher - The graphics will be imported only if the version of the file imported is higher than the installed version.

    • Overwrite regardless of content change version - The graphics will be imported.

  7. Select OK.

A horizontal bar shows the progress of the Industrial Graphics being imported into the active application. After the import is complete, the progress indicator disappears. The imported graphics are displayed in the Industrial Graphics pane.

Note: You can create or customize your XML file using the aaGraphics.xsd schema file located at:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\ArchestrA\Framework\Bin\aaGraphics.xsd

Limitations of importing or exporting XML

  • If a graphic contains an embedded graphic, the application exports each graphic as a separate XML file.

  • When you import graphics, the application places them in the root folder of the Industrial Graphics pane.

  • After exporting, if you edit the XML file manually, ensure that all values remain within the valid limits.

  • Updated primitive properties related to language changes do not persist after exporting and re-importing the graphic as an XML file.

  • Select up to 150 XML files at a time to ensure smoother application performance.

  • When a graphic with client controls or widgets is exported to an XML file and then imported into a new application, those controls and widgets do not appear in the thumbnail.
