Manage instance RDP rules

  • Last UpdatedMar 12, 2026

Use instance Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) rules to connect to virtual machines (VM)s with a remote desktop. We recommend using instance RDP rules (rather than global rules) because instance RDP rules limit which VMs they can connect to.

Note: Your internet service provider (ISP) governs your public IP address. Your ISP may issue a static IP address or a dynamic IP address. If the IP address is dynamic, then the connection to your VM may fail if your ISP generates a new IP address for you.

On the Instance RDP rules page, you can:

  • Add, modify, or delete an instance RDP rule.

  • Set a custom firewall rule name, if required, to make it easier to identify.

  • Configure the public IP address/range for the VMs.

The Level column indicates whether the rule is an instance RDP rule or a global RDP rule.

The Last access time column is the most recent usage of the rule.

The Status column indicates whether the rule is fully configured or still pending final configuration.

You can download and distribute RDP files and add RDP rules for user public IP addresses and public IP address ranges so that they can access specific instances. You can also:

  • Revoke public IP address and public IP address range access.

  • Check the status of an RDP rule.

For more details, see Add an instance RDP rule.
