OPC was originally known as OLE for Process Control and was later renamed to Open Platform Communications. OPC is a series of standard specifications developed through collaboration between leading automation suppliers. The early OPC specifications were based on Microsoft’s COM (Component Object Model) and DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) technologies, defining a standard set of objects, interfaces, and methods to support interoperability in process control and manufacturing automation applications.

Over time, OPC evolved to address platform dependency and scalability limitations.

OPC UA (OPC Unified Architecture) is the modern evolution of OPC. Unlike earlier OPC specifications, OPC UA is platform-independent and is not based on Microsoft COM/DCOM.

The Extension for OPC UA enables AVEVA Work Tasks to interact with OPC UA servers and exchange data securely.

Capabilities

  • Connect AVEVA Work Tasks to one or more OPC UA servers on the network.

  • Read and write tag values from OPC UA servers connected to the AVEVA Work Tasks server.
