The function is used to align a part edge with a selected geometry.

When this function is invoked, first prompt is to select an edge on the part that shall be aligned and the second prompt is to select the geometry (another plate edge or the raw plate boundary) to which the part shall be aligned. In case the geometry at the picking points have curvature, then the alignment is calculated based on the tangents in the picked positions.

The part is then displayed in a ghosted image on the canvas aligned with picked geometry and considering the default distances to other plate parts or to the raw plate edge. The ghosted image of the part can be moved along the alignment line and change side of alignment line. If the alignment side is changed so that both the part that is aligned and the part that is aligned to are on the same side, then distance between parts is set to zero.

When the part image is correctly placed, then a click in the canvas will transform the part to this position.
