Configure a dimension link

Dimension links allow you to create links between dimensions. When defining a measure, you can add linked dimensions to the measure context even if the measure source data has no direct reference to the linked dimension. The measure source data will be inferred from the dimension that defined the dimension link.

When you configure a link in a dimension and deploy the dimension, the system adds a column in the dimension table of the current dimension for each of the linked dimensions. This column contains the foreign key ID of the linked dimension. The column name is the same as the link name.

Configure a dimension link

  1. Under the Dimensions column, click the dimension for which you want to configure a dimension link. The Dimension Editor appears.

  2. Click the Links tab.

  3. In the Links section, click a dimension link that you want to configure.

    The Link name box shows the dimension link that you select.

    The Destination dimension list shows all dimensions but the current dimension of the AVEVA BI Gateway model.

  4. In the Destination Dimension drop-down list, click a dimension that you want to link to the current dimension.

    The Destination key field column in the Mappings grid shows all the key fields of the linked dimension.

    The Dimension field column in the Mappings grid shows the fields of the current dimension.

  5. In the Dimension field column, select a dimension field that you want to map to the corresponding dimension key field. You must provide a mapping for all the corresponding key fields of the linked dimension. Be sure that the field data type of the current dimension is compatible with the key field data type of the linked dimension. For more information, see Implicitly convertible data types.

    NOTE: When deploying dimensions referring to 'linked dimensions', ensure that the linked dimensions are deployed before the dimension using those links so that the relationships can be found. In the same way, the linked dimensions should be refreshed at a faster rate than the dimensions using those references.

  6. Click Save.
