Select dimensions to define the context for a measure

A measure is an aggregated value. You often need to provide a context to the aggregated value. To do this, you relate a measure to a dimension.

You can select dimensions that define the context of the measure. For example, you can select the Product and Shift dimensions and relate them to a Production measure. The Product and Shift dimensions define the context for the Production measure and allow reporting production by Product and Shift.

You can select the same dimension more than once. For example, you can select a Material dimension twice to define the Material Input and Material Output context for a measure.

By default, the system adds an alias name to the dimension that you select. Aliases must be unique within the context definition of a measure. For more information, see Define relationships for a measure.

The measure table contains a column for the reference value for each dimension that the measure relates to. The column name is the defined alias for the dimension.

Select dimensions for a measure

  1. Under the Measures column, click the measure for which you want to select the dimensions. The measure editor appears.

  2. Click the Context tab.

  3. Click Add Dimensions. You can select a maximum of 30 dimensions.

  4. In the Changing dimensions area, select a dimension that you want to map to the measure. An alias with a default name is added in the Changing dimensions pane under the Alias column. The Link option appears unselected by default. For more information about renaming a dimension alias, see Rename a dimension alias. For more information about configuring a context link for a dimension, see Select a context link dimension.

Note: You can click the Delete icon to remove a dimension. If you remove the dimension, the system deletes all the relationships that reference the dimension alias in calculations within the measure. For more information about measure calculations, see Manage measure calculations.
