The specification documents define the quality of design, fabrication, and installation that are required for the equipment and materials in the project. The extent and type of specifications developed in Front-End Loading (FEL) may vary significantly based on the type of project being considered. However, the specification documents typically include the following:

  • Major Equipment Specifications

These specifications cover detailed descriptions for key pieces of equipment, which include but not limited to storage tanks, pressure vessels, heaters, and compressors. These details can be based on established internal guidelines, which are the specifications provided by the client and industry standard specifications, such as Process Industry Practices (PIP).

  • Piping Specifications

These piping specifications outline the design and installation requirements for all piping materials on the project. The piping specifications for a typical project span a wide range of materials and pressure classifications to cover the various types of piping services required.

  • Instrument Specifications

These specifications outline the precise design and installation requirements for the project’s process instruments, which include control valves and safety relief devices. Documentation for instrument specifications may be in the form of instrument catalogues that outline parameters or detailed in individual instrument datasheets.

  • Motor Specifications

These specifications outline the general sizing, selection, and performance expectations for electric motors that are used in the project. Motor Specifications are organized according to motor voltage and horsepower, and typically identify details such enclosure types, service factors, and any specific requirements from the client.

  • Insulation Specifications

Insulation specifications outline the insulation material choices, types, and design criteria for insulating pipes and equipment within the project. These specifications are usually aligned with the client's unique preferences or follow industry standards, and can vary depending on the specific process requirements and the local environmental conditions.
