Interfaces read data from data sources and sometimes write data to data sources using PI points in Data Archive. A PI point stores a series of time-stamped measurements, such as temperature readings from a tank meter every five minutes. Input points store data from devices (data sources), and output points send data from Data Archive to devices.
PI points are also used to track the performance and status of interfaces. For more information, see Performance and status points.
Some point attributes have an interface-specific application. For details, refer to the interface user guide for which you are configuring points.
To configure points, you can use PI SMT. To configure large point counts, you can use the PI Tag Configurator, a Microsoft Excel plug-in.
For more details about configuring and managing PI points, refer to PI Server System Management Guide.
