In this section, you will become familiar with the feature of the DYNSIM Graphical User Interface and use it to configure a new simulation with two engines.

The Title Bar, displayed along the top of the main screen, includes the username and current operating environment. The Menu Bar located immediately below the Title Bar contains pull-down menus to configure and control the simulation.

The next row includes the Tool Bar, which contains shortcut buttons for quick access to frequently used tasks. These tasks are also available through the Menu Bar pull-down menus. The Menu Bar and Tool Bar content depend on the selected operating environment.

Three rectangular panes below the Tool Bar include the Simulation Status pane, the Snapshot pane, and the Malfunctions pane.

  • The Simulation Status pane on the left in the previous image indicates whether the simulation is in Run or Freeze mode.

  • The Snapshot pane in the middle of the previous image includes current snapshot status, the snapshot save button, and shortcuts to display the IC and Backtrack summary list.

  • The Malfunctions pane on the right of the previous image lists active malfunctions. Provides buttons to display the Malfunction Summary and to define a new malfunction.

  1. Change to Instructor environment to see the Trainee Performance Monitoring (TPM) pane by selecting View > Change Toolbars à Instructor. The TPM pane provides access to initiate new TPM sessions and to display the TPM Summary list.

  2. Return to the Engineer environment by selecting View > Change Toolbars > Engineer. The vertical pane at the left of the screen is a multipurpose panel arranged in three layers: Instances, Types and Monitor.

In the following illustration, the left pane displays an Instances Tree listing all simulation databases currently open. The color of the simulation database name refers to its status: Brown indicates an unloaded simulation and Green indicates a loaded simulation.

The following image is an example of a typical flowsheet.

The Command Line at the bottom of the screen performs selected command-line operations. Any text to the right of the command area indicates the most recently performed operation.
