Important! When creating VMs for System Platform, select Generation 2 to ensure best performance and security.
Generation 1 (not recommended)
-
Uses a legacy BIOS-based architecture.
-
Supports MBR (Master Boot Record) virtual hard disks.
-
Includes emulated hardware, such as IDE controllers, legacy network adapters, and virtual floppy drives.
-
Can boot only from an IDE virtual disk (SCSI disks require additional configuration).
-
Supports older operating systems that may not be compatible with UEFI requirements.
Note: UEFI (United Extensible Firmware Interface) is a replacement for the older BIOS firmware interface. UEFI controls the booting process of the PC, and then passes control to the operating system.
Generation 2 (recommended)
-
Uses UEFI firmware instead of BIOS.
-
Enables Secure Boot, which helps prevent unauthorized firmware or OS from running.
-
Supports GPT (GUID Partition Table) disks, allowing larger boot volumes.
-
Allows booting from SCSI virtual hard disks and SCSI virtual DVD drives.
-
Provides better performance and security compared to Generation 1.
-
Supports most 64-bit versions of Windows and newer Linux distributions.
Important! Once a virtual machine is created, its generation cannot be changed.
