The primary application of this method is to implement PI APS for existing interface instances with configured points. When points cannot be reassigned to interface instances based on a partitioning system suitable for Method 1, this method might be the only choice.
Method 2 satisfies the first rule for multiple interface instance configurations by designating one PI APS instance to manage available points and restricting the other PI APS instances for the same data source to updating their respective existing points. Therefore, Method 2 is intrinsically unable to automatically create points for multiple interface instances. When initially configuring multiple new interface instances that have no existing points, use Method 2 if and only if the PI APS Connector has no tag selection capability suitable for Method 1. If Method 2 is the only alternative, use PI APS to identify (without creating) the available points, which can then be manually assigned to interface instances and created.
Method 2 satisfies the second rule by using the hidden points feature to exclude the existing points of the other instances.
