The following procedure describes the steps a Power BI designer can follow to create and publish a Power BI report. The procedure is offered as a means to quickly get started publishing a Power BI report for use with the Power BI App. Refer to Microsoft Power BI documentation for more information about publishing Power BI reports.

Important: A Power BI report for use with the Power BI App must be published using the option "embed for your customers application".

To create and publish a Power BI report

  1. Open the Microsoft Azure website (https://portal.azure.com/) and log in with your Azure administrator credentials.

  2. Go to Azure Active Directory from the Azure portal menu.

  3. Go to App registrations from the portal menu.

  4. Click New registration.

  6. Select API Permissions from the portal menu and click Add a permission.

  7. Scroll through the list of permissions until you see the Power BI Service, and then select it.

  8. Select Application Permissions from the Request API permissions page.

  9. Under Tenant, select both Read/Write permissions.

  10. Select Add permissions.

  11. Grant Admin consent for the application.

  15. Enter a description and expiration period on the Add a client secret page, and then select Add.

  16. Record the value of the client secret value, which is shown in the Value field below. You need the client secret value to create a named credential for the Power BI report discussed in the next section of this chapter.

  17. Select Overview from the portal menu.

  18. Record the values assigned to the Display name, Application (client) ID, and Directory (tenant) ID fields.

These values are required to create a named credential for the Power BI report.

  19. Open the Power BI web site with your same administrator credentials.

    https://app.powerbi.com/

  20. Select Workspaces to show the My workspace page.

  21. Select Create a workspace, which shows the Create a workspace page.

  22. Enter a workspace name, a description, and then click Save.

  23. Click Access from the EquipmentStatusWorkspace page.

  24. Add the ServicePrincipal to this workspace.

For an Azure AD app to be able to access the Power BI content and APIs, a Power BI admin needs to enable service principal access in the Power BI admin portal. If you're not the administrator of your tenant, get the tenant's administrator to enable the Tenant settings for you.

    1. In the Power BI service, select Settings > Settings >Admin Portal.

    2. In the Admin Portal area, select Tenant Settings.

    3. Select Tenant settings and then scroll down to the Developer settings section.

    4. Expand Allow service principals to use Power BI APIs, and enable this option.

    5. Select The entire organization option beneath Apply to.

  25. Using your web browser's back key to return the EquipmentStatusWorkspace page that shows the Access tab.

  26. Select the Access tab to show the Access page.

  27. Enter the application name assigned in step 5 of this procedure and set the user role as an Admin.

  28. Click Add to make the report available.

  29. Click Close.

  30. Click Add Content and select the type of content you want to add to the report.

  31. After the content is loaded in the report, select the Power BI report to show the Workspace ID and Report ID in the URL field of your web browser.

The Workspace and Report IDs should appear in the URL as 32 character values including hyphens.

Save the Workspace and Report IDs. You need this information to specify as values of Power BI App properties.
