Use the Power BI content item to display a report from the Microsoft Power BI service.

Editors and viewers of this content item must have access to the Power BI report.

Power BI report that shows asset data

Configure the Power BI properties. If you wish to use the optional Asset Column, Asset, Time Column, and Filter boxes, you should be familiar with filtering a Microsoft Power BI report using query string parameters. See the Microsoft Learn article Filter a report using query string parameters in the URL for details.

The properties are:

  • In the Basic tab:

    • Follow asset context - When this is enabled, the asset context is used to filter the report. The asset selected for the context must be included in the report. The Asset Column box in the Advanced tab must have a valid value in order for filtering with the asset context to work. If the Asset Column box doesn't contain a valid value, the asset context is ignored:

      • If this content is in a visualization, it uses the visualization's asset context for report filtering. For details, see Create a new visualization.

      • If this content is in an experience, it uses the navigation item's asset reference for report filtering. For details, see the Add content to a pane section in Add content to panes in your navigation items.

    • Asset - If Follow asset context is disabled, select an asset to filter the report by that asset. The selected asset must be included in the report. The Asset Column box in the Advanced tab must have a valid value in order for filtering with this box to work. If the Asset Column box doesn't contain a valid value, the Asset property is ignored.

    • Follow time context - When this is enabled, the time context is used to filter the report. The Time Column box in the Advanced tab must have a valid value in order for time filtering to work. If the Time Column box doesn't contain a valid value, the time context is ignored. The source of the time context depends on whether this content item is in a visualization or experience:

      • If this content is in a visualization, it uses the visualization's time context as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Create a new visualization.

      • If this content is in an experience, it uses the time selected in the time selector content item as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Add a time selector.

    • Time - If Follow time context is disabled, select the time range by which to filter the report. The Time Column box in the Advanced tab must have a valid value in order for time filtering to work. If the Time Column box doesn't contain a valid value, the Time value is ignored.

    • Report ID - Enter the report ID from the URL of the Power BI report. The report ID is the section of the URL that starts after reports/ and ends at the next forward slash (/). For example, for the following URL:

      https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/reports/zabcde123-abcd-1234-1234-efgh12345678/ijk12345678abcdefgh?ctid=90123456-abcd-1234-abcd-567890123456&experience=power-bi&clientSideAuth=0

      the report ID is: zabcde123-abcd-1234-1234-efgh12345678

  • In the Advanced tab:

    • Title - The title that displays for this content item. This property is only available in grid visualizations; content items do not display titles in canvas visualizations or experiences.

    • Report section ID - If you wish to display a specific page of the report, enter the section ID from the report URL. If you don't enter a value here, the first page of the report will show.

To get the section ID, navigate to the desired page in Power BI. The section ID is the part of the URL that follows the report ID, and ends at the question mark (?). For example, for the following URL:

      https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/reports/zabcde123-abcd-1234-1234-efgh12345678/ijk12345678abcdefgh?ctid=90123456-abcd-1234-abcd-567890123456&experience=power-bi&clientSideAuth=0

      the report ID is: ijk12345678abcdefgh

    • Asset field filter - Enable filtering of the report by the Asset property or asset context.

Enter the name of the Power BI source table containing the asset field and the asset field name in the format <source table>/<field name>. For example, SpringdaleTurbines/Assets. This box is case-sensitive. If the value in this box is invalid, filtering by the Asset property doesn't work; no error message displays.

This box uses the same syntax that Power BI uses for filtering a report using query string parameters. For details, see the Microsoft Learn article Filter a report using query string parameters in the URL.

    • Time field filter - Enable time range functionality.

Enter the name of the Power BI source table containing the time or date column and the time or date field name in the format <source table>/<field name>. For example, SpringdaleTurbinesTimes/Date. This box is case-sensitive. If the value in this box is invalid, the time range bar doesn't function; no error message displays.

This box uses the same syntax that Power BI uses for filtering a report using query string parameters. For details, see the Microsoft Learn article Filter a report using query string parameters in the URL.

When a valid value is entered here, the content item updates to the time selected on the time range bar. The default time on the time range bar is the current day. If the Power BI report doesn't include any data for the current day, no data displays. Adjust the time range bar to the desired time for the Power BI report.

    • Other field filter - Filter by a field and value from the Power BI source table. This is similar to applying a filter with the Filters pane, but is saved with the rest of the content item properties.

Enter the desired value in the format <source table>/<field name> <operator> ‘<value>’. For example, SpringdaleTurbines/Status eq 'Good'. This box is case-sensitive. If the value in this box is invalid, the report isn't filtered; no error message displays.

This box uses the same syntax that Power BI uses for filtering a report using query string parameters. For details, see the Microsoft Learn article Filter a report using query string parameters in the URL.

    • Show Filters pane - Show the Filters pane from Power BI. Note that unlike the Filter field in this content item's properties, filters applied in the Filters pane are not saved.

    • Show Pages pane - Show the Pages pane from Power BI.

    • Show Action bar - Show the Action bar (also called the menu bar) from Power BI.
