Multi state graphic

  • Last UpdatedDec 10, 2025

The multi state graphic can convey a range of status indicators. Each may indicate a true or false condition in a Boolean format or by evaluating an expression. If configured with a multistate, this symbol can represent up to eight distinct status types. Choose from text styles, shapes, or indicators. Whether for simple binary status tracking or for more complex expressions, this customizable graphic lets you visualize and communicate statuses clearly and consistently.

Examples

The following multi state graphic has its Type property set to TextStyle.

The following multi state graphic has its Type property set to Shape and its Shape property set to Diamond.

The following multi state graphic has its Type property set to Shape and its Shape property set to Rectangle.

Configure the graphic

Configure the following properties for this graphic:

  • Follow asset context - The asset context affects properties that are configured to display asset stream ref data and asset metadata. When this is enabled:

  • Follow time context - When this is enabled:

    • If this content is in a visualization, it uses the visualization's time context as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Create a new visualization.

    • If this content is in an experience, it uses the time selected in the time selector content item as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Add a time selector.

  • Time - If Follow time context is disabled, select the time range for the data displayed in the content item.

  • In the Options section:

    • Type - The type of status graphic to display.

    • TextStyle - The appearance of the text graphic.

This is available when Type is TextStyle.

    • Indicator - The appearance of the indicator graphic.

This is available when ValueType is Expression or Discrete.

    • Shape - The appearance of the shape graphic.

This is available when Type is Shape.

    • ValueType - The type of value used in the graphic. Choose from:

      • Expression to use a mathematical expression to determine the value of a true or false condition.

      • Discrete to use a Boolean data point to determine the true or false value.

      • MultiStateNumber to define multiple numeric data points, each with its own operator and cutoff value.

      • MultiStateString to define string data points, each with its own operator and cutoff value.

    • Operator - The mathematical operator for the expression used to determine the state of the graphic.

This is available when ValueType is Expression or MultiStateNumber.

If the ValueType is MultiStateNumber, the number of Operators is set by the NumberOfItems property.

    • TrueColor - The color options of the graphic when the state of the graphic is true.

This is available when ValueType is Discrete or Expression.

    • FalseColor - The color options of the graphic when the state of the graphic is false.

This is available when ValueType is Discrete or Expression.

    • ShowTitleAs - Enables the Title property in the Graphic Properties section to set the graphic title and sets the font size.

Title is a larger font. Subtitle is a smaller font.

    • NumberOfItems - Choose between three and eight multi state items. The graphic renders based on the first true expression, evaluated in order.

This is available when ValueType is MultiStateNumber or MultiStateString.

Select a corresponding MultistateColor for each NumberOfItems item.

    • ShowLabel - Enables the Label property for the graphic.

This is available when Type is TextStyle and TextStyle is Overlay, Underline, or MultiLine.

    • ShowBorder - Displays a border for the graphic.

This is available when Type is Shape.

    • Switch - Displays indicators for the reverse condition. For example, if the switch is set to False, the indicator will be visible when the condition is true.

This is available when ValueType is Discrete or Expression.

    • ShowCard - Displays a colored background behind the graphic.

  • In the Graphic Properties section:

    • DataPoint - The data point or value for graphic.

The data point must contain Boolean data. This is available when ValueType is Discrete.

To select a data stream, select the field and then select the pencil icon. In the DataPoint window, select Streams. In the Search window, use the filters to find and then select the stream, asset stream reference, or asset metadata to display.

    • DataPointNumber - The data point or value to use in the mathematical expression.

This is available when ValueType is Expression or MultiStateNumber.

To select a data stream, select the field and then select the pencil icon. In the DataPoint window, select Streams. In the Search window, use the filters to find and then select the stream, asset stream reference, or asset metadata.

    • CutOffValue - The static value to evaluate the mathematical expression against.

This is available when ValueType is Expression or MultiStateNumber. For example, if CutOffValue is 5 and Operator is GreaterThan, then the evaluated mathematical expression is DataPointNumber > 5.

If the ValueType is MultiStateNumber, the number of CutOffValue fields is set by the NumberOfItems property.

    • Label - The asset or value used to identify the graphic.

This is available when ShowLabel is enabled.

To select an asset, select the field and then select the pencil icon. In the DataPoint window, select Streams. In the Search window, use the filters to find and then select the asset stream reference or asset metadata to display.

    • MessageOff - The string displayed when the value of the data point or expression is false.

This is available when ValueType is Discrete or Expression and Type is TextStyle.

    • MessageOn - The string displayed when the value of the data point or expression is true.

This is available when ValueType is Discrete or Expression and Type is TextStyle.

    • MessageMultiState - Enter the message to display when the condition of the multistate item is true.

This is available when ValueType is MultiStateNumber or MultiStateString; the number of MessageMultiState fields is set by the NumberOfItems property.

    • Title - The title text for the graphic.

This is available only when ShowTitleAs is Title or Subtitle.

  • In the Advanced tab:

    • Title - The title displayed for this content item in the grid visualization.

This is not available in a canvas visualization or experience. Set this value in the Title property in the Graphic Properties section.
