Add and manage navigation items

An experience consists of one or more pages of content called "navigation items." Each navigation item can display different content in its panes.

Navigation items are arranged hierarchically in the navigation model. You can create a custom hierarchy, associate a navigation item with an asset to automatically add that asset's hierarchy, or use a combination of custom and automatic hierarchies.

Typically each navigation item in an experience represents a different-but-related asset. For example, each navigation item might represent a different production line in a plant, or a different turbine on a wind farm.

Use the navigation model side panel to add and arrange navigation items in the experience's navigation model.

Note: The navigation model side panel that appears in the experience designer is not available when running an experience. If an experience includes more than one navigation item, it is recommended that you add a navigation method so that viewers can navigate between the navigation items in the experience. See Add a navigation bar or navigation tree for details.

Add navigation items

To add a navigation item, select Add sibling to add a navigation item on the same level, or Add child to add a child navigation item.

Note: Only one navigation item can be at the top level, so you cannot add siblings to the root navigation item.

You can also select Add sibling or Add child from the three-dot menu to the right of a navigation item.

Assign asset reference

Assign an asset reference to associate a navigation item with an asset. The asset reference enables the following functionality:

  • If there is a content item or graphic in the pane that has Follow asset context enabled, it uses the asset reference as its data source. This also applies to content items and graphics that are auto-filled from parent or child navigation items.

  • If a pane uses the Content types property, it is auto-filled with a visualization that matches the navigation item's asset reference and the pane's content type.

To assign an asset reference:

  1. Select the three-dot menu to the right of the navigation item, then select Assign asset reference. The Assign Asset Reference dialog appears.

  2. Select the asset you want to reference.

Include children is selected by default. This option adds child navigation items for all assets that are children of the selected asset. Deselect it if you don't want to include child assets.

  3. Select Assign.

Manage navigation items

Options for managing navigation items include:

  • Rearrange: Select and drag the six-dot icon to the left of a navigation item to rearrange it in the model.

  • Delete or Rename: Select the three-dot menu to the right of a navigation item to delete or rename it.

Configure navigation item properties

The navigation properties are:

  • Icon: Enter the name of the icon you want to display. The following image shows the supported icons. If the name includes multiple words, use a hyphen instead of a space, for example: Equipment-inventory

The accepted icon values and their accompanying thumbnails

  • Auto-fill settings: Select how content is filled automatically for panes that have Use for auto fill enabled. The options are:

    • None: Auto-fill is disabled.

    • Current only: Auto-fill is enabled. If there is auto-fill content that matches this navigation item for a pane, the pane is automatically filled. Otherwise the pane is blank.

    • Current, then up: Auto-fill is enabled. If there is no auto-fill content that matches this navigation item for a pane, the pane is auto-filled from the parent navigation item if there is content available.

    • Current, up, then down: Auto-fill is enabled. If there is no auto-fill content that matches this navigation item for a pane, the pane is first auto-filled from the parent navigation item if there is content available, then from the next child navigation item if there is no content available on the parent.
