This chapter contains descriptions and instructions for implementing both AVEVA Enterprise Licensing and legacy softkey and hardkey licensing for AVEVA Edge. If you selected the AVEVA Enterprise Licensing option during product installation, you will not be able to use the legacy licensing options (hardkey and softkey).
When you use AVEVA Enterprise Licensing, you can create projects for Embedded target systems (Windows Embedded and IoT View). Traditional SCADA runtime targets are not available with AVEVA Enterprise Licensing.
After describing AVEVA Enterprise Licensing, the rest of this chapter explains the legacy softkey and hardkey licensing options.
AVEVA Enterprise Licensing
The AVEVA Enterprise Licensing system is a common platform that allows you to manage AVEVA Enterprise Software product licenses. It is composed of a browser-based License Manager and a License Server that together allow you to share and deliver licenses for your installed products. It has the following features:
-
License Manager and License Server are installed as part of the AVEVA Enterprise Licensing system installation process.
-
You can install a License Manager and a License Server on the same computer, or on separate computers in your network.
-
One License Manager web server can manage multiple License Servers. However, a License Server can only be managed by a single License Manager web server.
-
Legacy licensing options do not coexist with Enterprise License. If you select the AVEVA Enterprise Licensing option during installation, the legacy licensing options (softkey or hardkey) will not function.
Note: AVEVA Enterprise Licensing installation requires your Windows operating system to be up to date.
Note: The License Manager requires internet access. See the AVEVA Enterprise Licensing Guide for more information and workarounds.
Note: If you are using AVEVA Enterprise Licensing for AVEVA Edge and you have more than one license type, you must create a device reservation for every device running AVEVA Edge.
Choosing the AVEVA Enterprise Licensing option during installation will copy the files to the <installation folder>\Redist\AEL\AVEVA Enterprise Licensing <version number>\ folder, and install the License Server and License Manager. You will also be prompted to run the Configurator at the end of the AVEVA Edge installation process.
You can install the License Manager on another machine to manage License Servers on this and/or several other machines. For more information, see the AVEVA Enterprise Licensing Guide (AELicenseManagerGuide.pdf) in the AVEVA Enterprise Licensing <version number> folder.
Opening a project created with a different license type
AVEVA Edge projects created with one licensing type (AVEVA Enterprise License or legacy licensing) are not licensed to run in the other. If you open a project created with a different license type, the project will open in Evaluation Mode and you will get a warning about this:

You can convert the project running in Demo Mode to a valid license type of the AVEVA Edge installation by changing the Target System in the ribbon Project tab. For example, choose AVEVA Enterprise to convert a legacy license project after opening it in AVEVA Edge with an AVEVA Enterprise License.
