Does Python run on both Windows and Linux (IoT View)?
Yes, Python scripts will run on both Windows and Linux (IoT View). The Python editor is only available in Windows in AVEVA Edge Studio.
Does AVEVA Edge still include the built-in scripting language and VBScript?
Yes, all three scripting languages coexist.
Can AVEVA Edge project tags and functions be accessed in Python scripts?
A subset of built-in functions are integrated in the HMI Python module. The HMI.ForceTagChange, HMI.GetTagValue, and HMI.SetTagValue functions are used to access tags.
What Python modules are available?
Most Python Standard Library modules are available by default, along with the HMI Python module (for accessing built-in language functions). Third party and custom Python modules can be installed using Pip.
Does AVEVA Edge support Pip (the package installer for Python)?
Yes, installing modules using Pip is supported. Modules are installed and managed outside of AVEVA Edge. Modules installed using Pip can be used in AVEVA Edge Python scripts.
Are Python data types like dictionary or DataFrame supported?
Python includes 'dict' as a standard data type for dictionaries and it works as expected. The DataFrame data type is part of the Pandas module, which can be installed using Pip.
Does AVEVA Edge support Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) using Python?
AVEVA Edge has always allowed Python to be used externally to run ML/AI algorithms. Now Python ML and AI modules can be installed using Pip, and then imported into Python scripts and implemented. AI/ML functionality is not included and requires scripting.
Does the Python editor support breakpoints and the other options on the Debug Tools tab?
No, the Python editor does not support breakpoints or the Debug Tools tab. See Troubleshooting and debugging Python for more information.
Can Python scripts be defined in Graphics environments (Command Animation, Screen Scripts, Graphics Scripts)?
No, Python scripts currently cannot be defined in Graphics environments. Python scripts are supported in Global Procedures and Background Tasks (the Startup Script and Script worksheets). Python scripts are executed by the Background Task and presently cannot be executed by the local Viewer, Mobile Access, or web Thin Clients.
What version of Python is used?
See the Release Notes for the current version of Python.
Can the version of Python be updated in the field?
We may release support for other versions of Python in the future. If so, they will be accessible as described below:
-
Windows files are located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\AVEVA\Python\Runtime\<version>\Windows\x86\Bin\Python
where <version> is the version of Python, for example 3.11.
-
Linux (IoT View) files are located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\AVEVA\Python\Runtime\<version>\Linux\<architecture>\lib
where <version> is the version of Python, for example 3.11, and <architecture> is the Linux machine processor, for example armv7l-2.23-6.0.21.
Can I send email with Python?
Yes, you can install a Python module to send email.
