Use the Remote Management tool to remotely install or upgrade the softkey license for the project runtime software running on an embedded device.
Prerequisites:
-
Access to the full software installed on your project development workstation.
-
Remote Agent running on a project runtime target station.
-
Both of the computers connected on the same network.
-
Have already purchased a valid license or license upgrade. You may purchase it when you send in the site code hardware identifier (see below), but doing so might increase your downtime. For more information, contact your software distributor. You can update any license setting (for example, product type, options), or you can upgrade the software to a new version. The cost of the update/upgrade depends on the difference between the current and new license settings.
Tip: In some cases you can purchase pre-configured devices, with the project runtime software and softkey licenses already installed. For more information, contact your software distributor.
This task applies both to installing a new softkey license and to upgrading an existing softkey license. Whatever license you install will overwrite the current license settings.
To remotely install or upgrade a softkey license on an embedded device:
-
In the development software, on the Home tab of the ribbon, in the Remote Management group, select Connect.
The Target tab of the Remote Management dialog box is displayed.

-
In Target Station, in the Host text box, type the host name or IP address of your embedded device.
-
Depending on the operating system, choose one of the following:
-
If the target station is a Windows Embedded device: Disable Use TLS. This feature is not used for Windows Embedded target stations.
-
If the target station is a Linux device: If connecting to a target station with a Remote Agent from a version of AVEVA Edge before v23.0, disable Use TLS. After upgrading the Remote Agent, enable Use TLS for future operations. (Use the Runtime Files group Install button to upgrade the target station Remote Agent. See Install and run IoT View on a target station for more information.)

-
Disable Use TLS. This feature is not used for Windows Embedded target stations.
-
When the Connect button becomes available, select it to connect to the target station.
The Status and Platform boxes show whether you have successfully connected.
-
After you have connected to the target station, select the Embedded License tab.
The Embedded License tab of the Remote Management dialog box is displayed, with the current license settings (if any) and a generated site code hardware identifier for the target station.

-
Send the site code hardware identifier to your software distributor.
Typically, you will copy the site code hardware identifier to your clipboard and then paste it into an email to your software distributor. To copy it to your clipboard, select the Copy button to the right of the Site Code Hardware Identifier box.
Note: An activation key is not the same as a site key activation code.
-
When you receive the site key activation code from your software distributor, type or paste it in the Site Key Activation Code box, and then select Authorize. Confirm when prompted.
The new license settings are sent to the target station, and then a confirmation message is displayed.
If the new site key activation code cannot be validated, an error message is displayed instead. If this happens, make sure you typed the site key activation code correctly. If you typed it correctly and still get an error message, contact your software distributor.
Also, in some cases, the new license settings might need to be saved in the target station's registry rather than in an encrypted file as they normally are. If this happens, an alert message will tell you to save the registry as soon as possible. If you do not, the new license settings might be lost when the target station is restarted. For more information about how to save the registry on the target station, see the manufacturer's documentation. Please note this applies only to Windows Embedded devices that are running Embedded HMI, not to Linux-based devices that are running IoT View.
