The PI Module Database (PI MDB) continues to be an essential component for certain PI System products, particularly those dealing with batch data and processes. Even though PI Asset Framework offers enhanced capabilities and can replace PI MDB in most capabilities, there are specific products and interfaces that still depend on PI MDB for their operations.

Key batch products, interfaces, and reporting tools

1. PI interfaces for batch and manufacturing executive systems: These interfaces populate the PI Batch Database and PI Module Database by capturing events and process data from various batch and manufacturing sources.

   Dependency: The interfaces depend on the PI MDB as the central data repository for processing information and batch context. Additionally, batches created in the PI Batch Database are linked to modules within the MDB.

   • PI Interface for Batch Generation (PIBaGen): PIBaGen collects batch data from various control systems and populates the PI Batch Database and PI Module Database.

All data are maintained in their original fidelity, and changes to the original data are tracked.

   Dependency: RtReports stores data and report templates in the PI MDB.

Migration to PI AF (Asset Framework)

While PI AF and Event Frames offer modern approaches to managing asset and event data, the transition for batch products has been more gradual. This is due to the complexity and critical nature of batch processes, which are deeply integrated with PI MDB.
