Release ownership of a buffered source's points

Use piartool with the -reset option to release ownership of all points owned by a buffered source with a specified registration ID. For information on finding the registration ID for a buffered source, see List buffered sources and points.

The -reset option may be used in rare situations to fix issues that are not addressed by other routine solutions, for example:

  • If you are using a non-buffered application to write new events to buffered points, use the -reset option to temporarily clear the PI Buffer Subsystem ownership of a point, then use the application to write new events.

  • If PI Buffer Subsystem does not get point updates automatically (which only happens under rare conditions), you may use this command to force PI Snapshot Subsystem to send point configurations to PI Buffer Subsystem the next time that in-order events are sent.

  1. At a command prompt, go to the PI\adm directory.

  2. Type: piartool -bfs ID -reset

When the command completes, you will see the query status indicating whether the command succeeded.

Note: After this command is run, when data is written to the points again, PI Data Archive will resend the configuration for all points to the PI Buffer Subsystem. Therefore, if the buffered source writes to a number of points, you may see a subsequent effect on the throughput after the command is run.
