Allocate AppEngines to platforms

If you are using Flex licensing, you must configure the number of AppEngines allowed on each platform object in the Galaxy. You can set each platform to No AppEngine, Counted AppEngines, or Unlimited AppEngines. For any platform object that you set to Counted AppEngines, you then set the number of AppEngine licenses for that platform.

You can configure Flex licensing for a platform only from Deployment view.

Note: If you use the Counted AppEngines or Unlimited AppEngines setting, the actual number of engines that will be usable on a platform may be limited by system performance, which will vary due to hardware, number of IO operations, historization, and other factors such as galaxy complexity and other running software. This limitation also applies when using perpetual licenses.

To configure Flex licensing

  1. If the Flex Licenses view is not shown, select the View ribbon, then, in the Windows area, select Flex licenses to display the view. Check how many licenses are available.

  2. Select Deployment view.

  3. Select the WinPlatform object to configure for licensing.

  4. If the platform object is deployed, undeploy it.

Note: If you are increasing the number of licenses for a platform that is set to Counted AppEngines, you do not need to undeploy the platform. You do need to undeploy the platform to decrease the number of licenses or change the type of licensing.

  5. Right-click the object and select :Flex Licensing.

  6. Select the desired number of AppEngine licenses for this platform:

    • No AppEngine means this platform is not licensed for any AppEngines. If you assign an AppEngine to the platform, the platform will show a configuration error and you will not be able to deploy it or any objects beneath it in the deployment hierarchy.

    • Counted AppEngines lets you assign one or more AppEngines to the platform. The Configure hosted engine count dialog box opens. Type the number of licenses to assign to this platform or use the up and down arrow keys to select the number. You can assign AppEngines up to the number of assigned licenses. If you assign too many AppEngines, you will receive a configuration error and the extra AppEngines and objects assigned to them will not be deployable. When too many engines are assigned, licenses are assigned randomly; you will not know until deployment which engines have been licensed and deployed and which have not.

Note: You can increase or decrease the number of licenses assigned to a platform by selecting Counted AppEngines again to return to the Configure hosted engine count dialog box.

    • Unlimited AppEngines lets you assign any number of AppEngine objects to the platform. As noted above, there is a practical limit to the number of AppEngines based on various software and hardware factors.

  7. Deploy the platform.

  8. Look at the Flex Licenses view to see the updated license availability counts. The count is automatically updated when a platform is deployed or undeployed, after a connection to the galaxy, or after a change to the platform license assignment. You can manually update the license counts shown by selecting the Refresh button.
