Export instances to a CSV file

You can export some or all instances and their configuration data to a comma-separated values (CSV) file. This file has a .csv extension and is sometimes called a galaxy dump file. After you export the instances, you can edit the CSV file with Microsoft Excel. This makes it very easy to do large editing changes, such as search and replace.

This feature exports only instances. You cannot export templates to a CSV file.

If you have an instance checked out when you export it, your checked-out version is exported to the CSV file. Otherwise, the checked-in version of each instance is exported, even if an instance is checked out by another user.

The CSV file contains attributes that are unlocked and configuration time-writeable, one column per attribute. If the Object Wizard was used to configure the instance, there are also columns for each Object Wizard choice and option.

The following are not exported:

  • Script libraries. Scripts within an object are exported.

  • Attributes that are not text-based. For example, type QualifiedStruct is not exported.

  • Custom object online help files.

Note: I/O Auto Assignment information is not included in the CSV file. For information about manually adding I/O Auto Assignment information to a CSV file for inclusion so it can be imported with the instance, see Enable I/O auto assignment in the exported CSV file.

See About the CSV file structure for specific information about the structure of the .csv file. Before you start, make sure you know what instances you want to export to a file.

To export objects to a CSV file

  1. In the Application views area, select one or more instances. Shift+click to select multiple instances. You can export all instances derived from a template by selecting the template.

  2. From the ribbon, select Galaxy, then select Export.

  3. Select Objects,. then Selected as CSV. The Export selected objects as CSV dialog box appears.

  4. Browse to the folder where you want to create the .csv file. Type the name of the file. Select Save.

  5. When the Galaxy export process is done, select Close. A .csv file is created containing the selected objects and configuration data.
