You need to install SQL Server Express as a minimum prerequisite for working with PI Manual Logger.

  1. Double-click the installation executable file to start the installation.

  2. Follow the instructions to install the prerequisite components. Newer versions of SQL Server (2008 and up) provide a System Configuration Checker on the Planning page to verify conditions on your machine that might cause issues during the installation.

  3. In the Feature Selection window, specify the components to install as shown in the following figures.

Note that figures for SQL Server 2008 Express are similar to the SQL Server 2012 screens used in this procedure.

  4. If you install SQL Server 2005 Express using Advanced Options or install SQL Server 2008/2012/2014/2016, the Instance Name window opens. The default instance name for SQL Express is SQLExpress; however, you can specify an instance name rather than using the default one. Make a note of these two pieces of data, the SQL Server name and the instance name, since they will be required in SQL Server Management Studio and in PIML Configuration Tools.

Note: Refer to the Microsoft documentation if you choose the Named Instance button instead of using the default Instance.

  5. Some installations might prompt you for service accounts for SQL services. Please refer to Microsoft documentation concerning the service accounts.

  6. In the Authentication Mode window, OSIsoft recommends that you refer to Microsoft security recommendations.

  7. Run Windows Updates to check if any updates exist for your version of SQL Server Express.
