PI Manual Logger

PI Data Archive security

PI Manual Logger communicates with and stores tag event data (tag value, timestamp, and comment) for a tour in a single PI Data Archive or a PI Collective if PI Buffering or a PI-to-PI interface are configured. When PI Manual Logger starts, it uses the default PI Data Archive. You can change this default server to another if necessary.

The PI Manual Logger PC client components (including PIML AutoSync for PI Manual Logger Mobile transfer), the PI Manual Logger Windows Services, and the PI Manual Logger Web Services, use PI SDK to communicate with PI Data Archive. PI Manual Logger Web uses AF SDK to communicate with PI Data Archive. A PI Manual Logger user must have read access to the point security, as well as read and write access to the data security to write point values to PI Data Archive. A PI mapping (or a PI trust connection) is therefore required. Before you start loading points to PI Manual Logger, configure the server connection to use a PI mapping (or a PI trust login).

PI mapping

For PI Data Archive version 3.4.380 or later and PI SDK 1.3.8.388 or later, OSIsoft recommends you implement Windows security through PI mappings. Windows security provides the strongest authentication and full Windows account traceability in PI Data Archive log and audit trail records. For details on how to configure PI mapping, refer to the PI Data Archive 3.4.390 Security Configuration Guide. You can obtain this manual from the Downloads tab at OSIsoft Customer Portal.

PI trust

To configure a PI trust, refer to the Manage Trusts section of the PI System Management Tools (PI SMT) User Manual/Help, which you can obtain from the Downloads tab at OSIsoft Customer Portal OSIsoft Tech Support.

Additional security features

A PI Manual Logger user must have read access to the Point Security, as well as read and write access to the Data Security to write point values to PI Data Archive.

PI Manual Logger also provides support to ensure your data is secure. The additional security features are:

  • PC-side data persistence security

  • Data communication security

  • User login on the device

  • PI Data Archive security
