Security requirements
To use the Display Utility, the user running the Display Utility must be a member of the PI Vision Utility Users Windows group or the PI Vision Admins Windows group on the AVEVA PI Vision server to which the Display Utility is connecting. To copy displays between servers, the user must be a member of this group on both the source and destination servers.
Note: AVEVA PI Vision Utility Users group members have authorization to read and modify any display on the associated computer system, so use caution when adding users to this group.
Prior to AVEVA PI Vision 2019, the Display Utility connected directly to the SQL Server databases and the person running the Display Utility needed to be provided the appropriate database access rights in SQL Server. In the current release, the Display Utility interacts with the AVEVA PI Vision displays using web services. Database access rights are no longer required. The only requirement is that the user running the Display Utility is in the AVEVA PI Vision Utility Users group on the appropriate AVEVA PI Vision servers.
Note: The PI Vison Utility application pool needs access to SQL; ideally using the same account as the other two app pools so that it can use the same DVService SQL permission set. For more information about application pools, refer to Configure PI Vision application pools to use the PI Vision service account.
General requirements
-
For most operations, the 2025 Display Utility can be used only with PI Vision 2025 server. This includes:
-
Deleting displays
-
Reassigning display ownership
-
Setting the permissions on displays (to control user access)
-
Importing display files to a PI Vision server (you can import displays only to a 2025 server, but the source server can be version 2019 or later)
Note: To modify displays on older versions of AVEVA PI Vision server, the Display Utility version corresponding to that release must be used.
-
-
Active connection to AVEVA PI Vision
When copying displays from one system to another, the AVEVA PI Vision Display Utility must connect to both the source and destination server at the same time. If this isn’t possible, copy the displays from the source server to a Windows folder, then copy the files from the Windows folder to the destination server.
-
Windows Authentication
The Display Utility must use Windows Authentication or OpenID Connect to connect to the AVEVA PI Vision server(s).
