After you complete the pre-migration tasks, follow the steps below to migrate your on-premises SQL database to Azure SQL Database using the Azure SQL migration extension for Azure Data Studio.

The instructions below are based on migration steps provided by Microsoft.

Note: Azure Data Studio retires in 2026. Instead performing your migration using the Azure SQL migration extension for Azure Data Studio, you also have the option to use Azure CLI or Windows Powershell.

Prerequisites

  1. Install the Azure SQL migration extension.

  2. Make sure that your Azure subscription is registered for Microsoft.DataMigration.

Migrate your database

  1. Open Azure Data Studio.

  2. Connect to the on-premises PI Vision SQL Server database that you want to migrate to Azure SQL Database.

  3. Right-click the on-premises PI Vision SQL Server database and select Manage.

  4. On the Manage page, select Migrate to Azure SQL.

  5. Select the Azure SQL Migration tab, then select Migrate to Azure SQL.

  6. Select Next to begin the migration session.

  7. On Step 1: Databases for assessment, select the PI Vision database that you want to migrate, then select Next.

    6. Select Next.

  11. On Step 5: Azure Database Migration Service, enter or select the following information:

    1. Your Azure subscription name & ID

    2. Name of your resource group

    3. Select a pre-configured Azure Database Migration Service or select the Create new link to create a new service.

  12. If an Integration Runtime Agent is already installed on the machine, it is listed at the bottom of the screen. If one is not installed, perform the following steps:

    1. Select the Configure Integration Runtime link.

    2. Select self-hosted integration runtime on my local machine.

    3. Select Execute Script.

    4. Once the script completes, select Next.

  13. On Step 6: Data source configuration, provide the following information:

    1. The credentials for connecting to the local on-prem SQL Server.

    2. Select all tables on the Available on Target tab.

    3. Select Update, then select Run Validation.

    4. After the validation process has been completed and passed, select Done.
