If you plan to host your AVEVA PI Vision SQL database on Amazon RDS for SQL Server, complete these pre-installation tasks before installing AVEVA PI Vision:

  1. Determine which authentication method you will use for PI Vision web services to connect to the Amazon RDS for SQL Server database during application runtime.

Windows Integrated Security - This requires the Amazon RDS for SQL Server to be joined to the same Active Directory domain as the Windows account running the AVEVA PI Vision web services. See Working with Active Directory with RDS for SQL Server.

SQL Server authentication - SQL Server authentication is not recommended due to the need to store the password in PI Vision’s web.config in plain text. Refer to Modify the web.config file for details.

  2. Determine which authentication method you will use to connect to Amazon RDS for SQL Server to run the Go.ps1 script to create the PI Vision database. If in the previous step you determined that you are using SQL Server authentication for web services to connect, you will also use the authentication method chosen in this step to add permissions for that SQL user.

    The available authentication methods are:

Windows Integrated Security - This requires the Amazon RDS for SQL Server to be joined to the same Active Directory domain as the Windows account you will use for authentication. See Working with Active Directory with RDS for SQL Server.

  3. Ensure that the correct permissions are granted to the account that will authenticate with Amazon RDS for SQL Server to run the Go.ps1 script to create the AVEVA PI Vision SQL database. To review the permissions required to create the database, refer too Run the Go.ps1 script to configure the PI Vision database. If using SQL Server authentication for AVEVA PI Vision web services to connect to the AVEVA PI Vision SQL database during application runtime, after running Go.ps1 permissions you will also need to add permissions for the AVEVA PI Vision web services SQL user. For more information, refer to Add permissions to the PI Vision database for web services.
