Add content to panes in your navigation items

After you configure the pane layout and navigation items, you can add content to the panes either manually or by using autofill.

Note the following:

• Each pane or tab can display a different content item. See Add and organize panes.

• Each navigation item can display different content in its panes.

• The layout and pane properties are set by the root navigation item.

• Navigation items that are automatically populated as children from the parent's asset reference cannot have customized content in their panes. Their panes are automatically populated.

You can add content to panes manually to choose exactly what appears in each pane or tab, or you can configure panes to autofill with content based on asset references and content tags.

Add content to a pane manually

You can manually add content items, graphics, or existing visualizations to a single pane or to each tab in a tabbed pane. Manually adding content overrides the pane’s autofill settings.

Note: To add content to a tabbed pane, first set the pane’s Pane type property to Tabbed. For instructions, see Configure pane properties.

To add content to a pane:

1. Select the pane you want to add content to.

2. Select Add content near the top of the page.

3. Select the content you want to add, then select Select.

4. Configure the content properties. The available properties depend on the type of content:

   • Content items and graphics: While most properties are the same as when adding content to a visualization, the following properties are unique to adding content to an experience:

     • Follow asset context: This is enabled by default. The content uses the navigation item's referenced asset as its data source. If you have an experience with navigation items that reference different assets, this allows you to add and configure content for one navigation item, then auto-fill it for the other navigation items. For each navigation item, the content shows data for the asset referenced by that particular navigation item.

       For content items in the visualization category (for example, a column chart or line chart), this applies to asset stream ref data sources. Stream data sources are not affected by the asset context.

       For graphics, the asset context applies to any property fields that are configured with an asset stream ref data source.

     • Follow time context: This is enabled by default. The content uses the time set by the time selector content item. See Add a time selector for details about adding a time selector to the experience.

       For details about the other properties, see Add content to an experience or visualization.

       Note: If you swap content, streams or assets added to the previous content are not saved.

   • Visualizations: The following properties can be configured for a visualization added to an experience.

     • Follow asset context: This is enabled by default. The visualization uses the navigation item's referenced asset as its asset context. This affects any content in the visualization that is configured to follow the asset context. If you have an experience with navigation items that reference different assets, this allows you to add a visualization for one navigation item, and then its content will automatically update based on the navigation item. For each navigation item, the visualization's content shows data for the asset referenced by that particular navigation item.

     • Follow time context: This is enabled by default. The visualization uses the time set by the time selector content item. This affects any content in the visualization that is configured to follow the time context. See Add a time selector for details about adding a time selector to the experience.

     • Show original background: This appears for canvas visualizations. The background color or image configured for the visualization displays.

     • Show card background: This appears for grid visualizations. The card background displays for the content items in the visualization.

     • Show card outlines: This appears for grid visualizations. The card outlines display for the content items in the visualization.

For tabbed panes

When you add the first piece of content to a tabbed pane, the content appears on a tab within the pane. To add another tab, select the pane again and add another piece of content. This action creates a new tab automatically. Each additional piece of content you add creates a new tab. Configure the properties for each tab's content individually.

To rename a tab for content you added manually, double-click the tab name and enter a new name.

Automatically populate a pane or tabs with visualizations based on content tag

You can configure a single pane or each tab in a tabbed pane to autofill with a visualization based on the asset reference and selected content tag. This feature lets viewers see relevant, asset-specific visualizations without manual setup for each navigation item. If your experience has multiple navigation items, each referencing a different asset, you can set the content tag on the root navigation item, and each child navigation item automatically displays the appropriate visualizations for its asset.

For example, if your experience includes navigation items for Turbine1, Turbine2, and Turbine3 (each referencing a different wind turbine), you can set up a pane or tabbed pane to autofill with visualizations that have Maintenance/Predictive content tags. Each navigation item then displays the appropriate maintenance/predictive visualization for its asset.

You must configure autofill on the root navigation item.

How autofill works with single and tabbed panes

Single pane: The pane automatically fills with the first matching visualization based on the selected content tag and asset reference.

Tabbed pane: The system automatically creates tabs and fills them with matching visualizations based on the selected content tags and asset reference. The Maximum items pane property sets the maximum number of tabs for the pane. If the number of matching visualizations exceeds this limit, the system selects items up to the limit in alphabetical order. Tab names use the visualization names and can’t be renamed.

To configure autofill of a single pane or tabbed pane:

5. In the pane properties, select at least one content tag in the Content tags property. See Configure pane properties.

6. Assign an asset reference to the navigation item. See Add and manage navigation items.

7. Ensure there is a visualization associated with the selected content tag and asset reference.

About visualizations in experiences

Note the following about visualizations in experiences:

• If a grid visualization has a canvas visualization embedded in it, using it in an experience is not supported. It may not respond to the asset context or time context.

• If Follow asset context or Follow time context are disabled for the the visualization, buttons appear at the top of the pane to set the asset context or time context for the visualization manually.

• You can interact with content within a grid visualization, but cannot interact with content in a canvas visualization. This limitation only applies in the experience designer. Viewers running the experience can interact with content in either visualization type.

Hide pane names

It can be helpful to hide the pane names when adding or modifying content in an experience. To hide the pane names, select Hide pane names from the experience dropdown at the top of the page.

This setting only affects the current session. It doesn't affect viewers; pane names are not shown when viewing a visualization.
