Sankey diagram

A Sankey diagram shows the flow of data between nodes. It is typically used to show flow, movement, or change, with each node representing a different stage or entity. Nodes are linked by data items (streams, asset stream refs, or asset metadata) that start at a source node and flow to a target node. The width of each link is proportional to the data item’s value.

Some common uses of a Sankey diagram include:

  • Energy Flow: Visualize how energy moves through the operation, from generation or purchase to consumption and losses, helping identify efficiency opportunities.

  • Water Management: Show how water is sourced, used, recycled, and discharged across processes to improve resource utilization and sustainability.

  • Production Flow: Visualize how raw materials are converted into products, by-products, and waste throughout the production process.

  • Emissions Tracking: Show how different operations contribute to emissions, helping teams monitor environmental impact and identify reduction opportunities.

Configure the following properties for this content item:

  • In the Basic tab:

    • Follow asset context - When this is enabled:

      • If this content is in a dashboard, it uses the dashboard's asset context as the asset for asset stream ref data. For details, see Create a new dashboard.

      • If this content is in an experience, it uses the navigation item's asset reference as the asset for asset stream ref data. For details, see the Add content to a pane section in Add content to panes in your navigation items.

This property only affects asset stream ref data; it has no effect if the content item is configured with stream data.

    • Follow time context - When this is enabled:

      • If this content is in a dashboard, it uses the dashboard's time context as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Create a new dashboard.

      • If this content is in an experience, it uses the time selected in the time selector content item as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Add a time selector.

    • Time - If Follow time context is disabled, select the time range for the data displayed in the content item.

    • Nodes - Nodes are vertical markers in the diagram. Each data item in the diagram is configured to flow from a source node to a target mode.

Select Nodes, then select Add node to add the nodes to include in this diagram. For each node, configure the name and color.

    • Data - Select Data, then select Add data to add data items to include in this content item. You can search for data items by name, by filter, or both.

      • To search by name, enter a value in the Search for data field.

      • To apply filters, select Filter icon to view and select filters. Select Back icon to accept your selected filters and return to the previous search panel.

      • To add a single data item, select that item's name. To add multiple data items, check the box for each, then select Add data.

      • For stream or asset stream references, selecting the item’s name expands its list of properties and selects Value only. Selecting the checkbox expands the list and selects all properties. Select or clear properties as needed.

    • Configure data - After data items have been added, select the expand button to configure each data item:

      • Source - Select the source node.

      • Target - Select the target node.

      • Color - Select which node the data item's color is derived from.

      • Decimal places - Select the number of decimal places to show in the tooltip for this data.

  • In the Advanced tab:

    • Title - The title that displays for this content item. This property is only available in grid dashboards; content items do not display titles in canvas dashboards or experiences.

    • Statistics - The metric to use for the data. See Understand statistic options for details.

    • Show values on nodes - Each node show the total value of data items using it as a source.

Edit, hide, or remove data

After a stream or asset stream ref has been added to the content item, use the buttons to the right of it to edit, hide, or remove it.

  • Hide/Unhide: Hide or unhide the stream or asset stream ref.

  • Remove: Remove the stream or asset stream ref from the content item.
