The map content item displays assets on a map based on their latitude and longitude. Map layers that are associated with the assets can be configured to display as well.

Note: For details on the requirements for an asset to show on the map, see Data requirements for visualizations. To update this information, you must have the ability to modify asset metadata properties.
Configure the basic properties
Configure the following properties in the Basic tab for this content item:
-
Follow asset context – When this is enabled, the asset selected in the asset context shows on the map, and the map zooms in on it. The appearance of the asset context marker and the info that displays for it can be customized in the Asset Context info advanced settings.
-
If this content is in a dashboard, it uses the dashboard's asset context. For details, see Create a new dashboard.
-
If this content is in an experience, it uses the navigation item's asset reference. For details, see the Add content to a pane section in Add content to panes in your navigation items.
-
-
Assets – Select assets to include in this content item. Up to 100 assets can be selected. You can search for assets by name, by filter, or both.
-
To search by name, enter a value in the Assets field.
-
To apply filters, select
to view and select filters. Select
to accept your selected filters and return to the previous search panel.
-
To add a single asset, select its name. To add multiple assets, check the box for each, then select Select.
-
-
Follow time context - When this is enabled, the content item uses the the time context for the information it displays. The locations shown on the map reflect the location of the assets at the last available time in the time range. If you specify any conditional variables, the average over the specified time range is used. The source of the time context depends on whether this content item is in a dashboard or experience:
-
If this content is in a dashboard, it uses the dashboard's time context as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Create a new dashboard.
-
If this content is in an experience, it uses the time selected in the time selector content item as the time range for the data it displays. For details, see Add a time selector.
-
-
Time - If Follow time context is disabled, select the time range. The locations shown on the map reflect the location of the assets at the last available time in the time range. If you specify any conditional variables, the average over the specified time range is used.
Configure the advanced properties
Configure the following properties in the Advanced tab for this content item:
-
Title - The title that displays for this content item. This property is only available in grid dashboards; content items do not display titles in canvas dashboards or experiences.

Map layers section
The Map layers section appears if at least one selected asset has at least one map layer associated with it. Map layers display geographic data including points, lines, polygons, and feature collections.
A Map Layer is an entity created through the API. It includes:
-
GeoJSON data: Standard geographic features, which support:
-
Point and MultiPoint markers, typically used for features such as asset locations
-
LineString and MultiLineString lines, typically used for features such as pipelines and routes
-
Polygon and MultiPolygon areas, typically used for features such as sites or regions
Each feature combines a geometry (location or shape) with properties (custom key-value metadata).
-
-
Related assets: A list of assets linked to the map layer by a relationship. The map layer appears on the map automatically when its related assets are added.
For details on creating map layers through the API, see Content Management.
